PostSubject: Welding cost   Tue Mar 30, 2010 7:21 pm

I don't really know if anybody can help me with this!

On my 106 I think I need to get some rust in the rear arch area cut out and plated before it gets too bad, it's near the boot seam which is one of the few weak points on the 106 possibly because there are three layers of metal, and if water sits in the middle the middle sheet rots but you can't see it until signs on the otside appear, which is what I've just started to notice.
I might also get the boot floor edges seam welded while it's in to stop any cracks forming.

So anybody any ideas how much I'm looking at to get that welded? Obviosuly wanting to get a reasonable deal, and just reasure myself before I can go and get quotes lol.

I don't know how quickly it's going to progress, chances are I'll keep my car for a couple of years until I have 5 years no claims but the rusting might start to get pretty rapid now that it's visible?

To be honest I really need to inspect the inside of the wheel arch, and the weather today is perfect but I've got to go up to Brighton to move the rest of my uni stuff out in a minute!

This is the area I mean though, from the inside of the car

Also worried the seam may be starting to go, hence wanting to get it seam welded along the edge?

That doesn't look like it's coming from the outside... just looks like something has rubbed the paint off and left exposed metal...

If it did need plating it'd be an awful job... look in excess of 150.

In all honesty?, sand it down and waxoil or paint it.

I think it's a common rust area for Saxo/106, not experienced it myself but from what ive read people get a plate welded in the arch.

On the cost part, do you not know anyone who is handy with a welder? maybe find a fabrications outfit nearby, wouldn't take much patching up.

There is a sheet metal fabricators opposite me which I'll try, and just run around garages for a day, got one person in mind that could possibly do it mates rates but we'll see.

Still unsure on the extent of the rust on the outter side.. guessing if it has come through it's going to be a mess Laughing

based on what others from 106 Rallye Reg. have said I would expect to pay 100-150.
