PostSubject: 306 Gti-6    Sun Jun 17, 2012 11:35 pm

I picked up ANOTHER french car this week.
A very clean X reg ph3 Gti-6.
Lovely gearbox and engine and the handling and grip is impressive for a standard car.
I decided on this particular Gti-6 after looking at another 306 Rallye and three other Gti-6s.
picked this one because of fsh,all the important work done, belts,hg, full suspension rebuild, near enough standard apart subtle SS catback exhaust.
and EVERYTHING works but aircon could do with regassing.
No plans for it other than yellow tint fogs, as standard it's a great car and is just as capable down a country lane as my twin's 182.
My old 106 gti was cammed, polybushed, full spax adjustable suspension etc but was no where near as good as the standard 6 although I will miss the pops and bangs
I have owned plenty of quick French cars but I forgot how great these are.
my old Gti

and its replacement

114,000 miles but fsh, refurbished gearbox, fsh and belts done. pulls like a train, better than my old 306 Rallye.

I've had the cammed Gti,a stripped lairy 16v'd Rallye and two standard s1 rallyes.
the 1.3 were best balanced and proper fizzy little cars, the 16v Rallye with 1.3 box was nuts, way quicker in a straight line but not a as stable in the corners or at high speed covers.
the 306 just does it easier. the 16v Rallye was more involving and rewarding to drive and a weapon down a b road but no fun as a dialy.
maybe I'm getting old..

oh yes! The Rallye looked better. but I wouldn't want to go back to wind windows, less airbags, cloth interior, manual mirrors. For a weekend toy yes but not a daily!
I'll keep this one for more than 3months:)

Its getting a full service on Monday and a gearbox oil drain.using the total Bv 75w80 stuff pug use, should be nice and smooth. Also a new clutch cable, pug performance linkages, new spark plugs and a decat. hope that will free up some revs.

I do miss the Rallye:)
I've had my first problem with the 6. The stainless steel backbox has a small crack/ split by one of the exhaust hanger. I'll have to get it welded soon. Also the mid silencer knocks on the heatshield.
I've done a full service incl gearbox oil and fitted new clutch cable.feels lovely now.
