PostSubject: Car help because i'm mincing about   Fri Mar 04, 2011 6:22 am

Been offered this for 450...

'k' reg grey XSI for sale

its a very nice little car and is very nippy being 1.6 8v it has been lowered 60mm, has a fast road clutch, short shift, straight through exhaust system with a 3" back box and has had a GTI rear beam conversion.

the car has been stripped out but i still have all the interior which will come with the car if the new owner wishes to put the car back to standard....

engines runs with no problem starts up first time even in the cold weather. all the electric windows work no probs the only down fall is that the speedo has stopped working but its an easy fix just haven't got round to fixing it yet.

there is also abit of laquer peel on the roof and 1/4 panel which i did start to rub down ready to be sprayed but not got round to getting it finished there is no rust at all on the body work and is a very tidy little motor for its age.

may also need a new thermostat as heating not working properly although have flushed out sytsem so not got any blockages and heater matrix pipes are getting warm.... it also needs some new rear brake pads...

has got a fresh MOT till december 2011 and TAX till may time, mileage on the clock is 106k altho these clocks came with the car....

im wanting 650 ono

http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2319769.htm

Or I have a silver Mk1 Vtr possibly being offered as a straight swap for mine. Do I go for one of these or save up another week or 2s wages?

that sounds like you've sort of made your mind up to me tbh mate, but I said my opinion in your other thread...

I know it's not ideal but it helps prevent another money pit. I appreciate what people say about French being cheap and you know them better but imo a broken French car is the same as a broken Jap car if you know where to go you can get 2nd hand Jap parts the same price as French.

You allways want to get the best car you can but sometimes needs must.

You WILL need a car ASAP especially with the move and all the other things.

Whats to say a more expensive car doesn't have problems? I know this as my Bora certainly had its fair share of things I needed to sort.

I agree with Woz that a car with problems is still a car with problems, be it Jap, French or German(!) But you know these Frenchies very well so it does make sense to go back to one.

I totally appreciate where your coming from Jimmy on the more expensive cars have there own problems however my experiences from when I first started driving...I set out getting a decent amount of money together to buy a middle of the road(in terms of price) 106 1.1 it wasn't a cheap knacker but it was no means a show stopper.

the 106 1.1 Never had a fault was the most reliable car I've owned so far really with only general wear and tear.

I sold that for not alot less than I paid for it 2 years later with a few choice mods to buy the GTi again this wasn't a cheap version at the time they ranged from 2k for a Diablo red up to 5k for moonstone blue and nana I paid 3k for a black one was again middle territory. Never went wrong until I touched it really Laughing

Sold that for a half decent sum which could have funded the MR2 but I'd saved the money instead. again the MR2 hasn't gone wrong and isn't showing signs of doing so atm.

Compare that to errrm Stu.

I understand that Rich needs a car...then why not settle for a quicky or a VTR? They are cars albeit not as fast but might do just until he can afford the car he really wants, they seem to have levelled out in the depreciation stakes aswell so he may not loose much money off it

Ha ha. Yeah.

Best car I had was my Golf 2.3 V5. Bought in 2006 for about 6k. Had it for 3 years and only 1 thing went wrong which was covered by the warranty fortunatley.

Compare that to the Bora that was bought in Dec '09 at just over 3k. Have changed/fixed so much stuff its unreal. Thank god I have connections at VW as parts aint cheap.

But Rich wont be able to get that sort of dosh together and I know he needs to sort something now.

Thats not true, if we bully him enough we can make him make a decision Razz

If the car is just a stop gap it doesn't need to be one of the super ones like Woz said, allthough it would be nice to have one.....

No harm in looking though as you might find a gem.

exactly, if it was me i'd buy a decent VTR which he could use on track and he mentioned something yesterday about getting his old VTS engine back so he could chuck that in it later on if he wished.

Woz that vts is actually quite nice.
Im possibly going to view one tomorrow in Reading.

Budget has just gone down as dads stealing my money to pay bills. Yes we are that poor atm!

I should have 500ish to spend once I get paid next week. No point me saving atm as parents will just keep asking me to pay things.

Like my new avi, location and thread title. Did someone order mince?

If you want something reliable for 500, buy a good 1.1 or a Cinq or something with a tiny engine. Unless you're lucky, you simply won't find anything that won't need work that's half decent for that money.

I say stick a decent engine/rebuild the engine in the MR2. You've got a bloody good shell there, the suspension knocks etc are easily sorted, once you do that you've got a bloody good car there. Yeah, it might take time, but do it all properly and you'll only need to do it the once. Learnt that on the GTi - the amount of time it spent off the road due to me being a tit was massive compared to when I did things properly.

And you're really thinking of buying a 400 XSi as a reliable daily... buy it as a breaker if it's got the 1.4 box etc, apart from that, just no - you'll be making this same thread again!

He maybe joking, but if a reliable a to b car is all you need then get it bought. Few years back i bought an L plate Micra on 70k for 350. Ended up using it for four years and getting just over 160k before the shell went. Good on fuel too.
